My engine makes quite a bit of noise (ticking, some squeaking, etc.) when it is idling. It seems to run fine, but it is quite noisy. In fact, it's probably the noisiest of any car I've owned. It doesn't sound like it's going to die, and the idle is pretty even, it just sounds like a cheaply made engine.

A ticking sound could be one of all of the above ideas but there is also one other possible source. If there is a misaligned or loose exhaust manifold gasket the motor will tick. If that is the case it usually gets quieter as the motor gets hotter.

So my car has developed a ticking sound coming from seemingly behind the glove box under load. An inconsistent ticking at idle and a consistent sewing machine type ticking under load at every RPM.
